[Guide] NAS Killer 6.0 - DDR4 is finally cheap

Hi all, I am requesting some help please to get this build up and running; I’ve worked on PCs in the past, but I have no background with servers, NAS units and the like.

I have been able to salvage the motherboard, CPU, RAM and PSU from my old gaming rig. My objective is to build a NAS unit so that we can get all our movies, pictures, etc off of external drives (have had one failure already!) and into a RAID.

So far I have been able to strip out the parts from the old case, place them in the new case and boot up back into Windows. All good, runs the same as it did when it was it the older case. I then went and started adding in all the “NAS” related components, and created the Unraid USB boot drive, and this is where the fun / lack of experience begins!

Current status:

  • All parts have arrived and have been assembled. Parts as per below:

    • Case: Cooler Master N400
    • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z490M (salvaged from previous PC)
    • PSU: Corsair RM850 (salvaged from previous PC)
    • CPU: Intel i5-10500 @ 3.6GHz, 6 core (salvaged from previous PC)
    • RAM: Neo Forza NMUD416F82-3200DG-20 (2 x 16GB) (salvaged from previous PC)
    • Cooling: Thermalright Assassin X120 (CPU), Arctic P12 PWM PST 120mm x 2 (installed, but it seems you can have two in the front??)
    • HBA: ADAPTEC ASR-71605
      • Fan added for increased air flow as recommended here.
    • Storage:
      • HGST HUH728080ALN600 8TB x 3
      • HGST HUH728060ALN600 6TB x 4 (thought these were 8TB…)
      • HGST HUH721008ALN600 8TB x 1
    • Cables:
      • SFF-8643 → SATA/SAS breakout x 2
      • CP-8920393 Corsair Elite Premium Individually Sleeved SATA Power Cable x 2 (for the PSU I have, it required these connectors to fit the PSU)
  • Unraid USB created and boots up into the main screen.

    • At times during the boot sequence, it will flash up a message - “controller firmware being updated. Update successful, rebooting in 5 seconds…”.
      • EDIT: I saw this: “If CSM is disabled, enable it. Look up taping off the SMBUS pins. Disable anything resembling Fast Boot.“ CSM was disabled, as I used to have a dual boot Windows / Linux Mint setup on that machine. I have reenabled, and I saw a different message pop up; saying to press CTRL + A to get into the manager screen. When I rebooted, the message did not appear, so I took the card out, reseated it, and the message came back. I tried pressing CTRL + A, but it just continued booting.
    • Originally, this was getting stuck in a boot loop, but now it’s only happening once and then continues on through to booting UnRaid.
      • EDIT: This message is now different (see previous dot point).
  • Currently the drives are not appearing in the main control panel of unraid.

    • I believe this is caused by the Adaptec ASR-71605 HBA currently not being configured correctly?
      • During the boot sequence, all 8 LEDs go solid red, then turn off, with only 3 LEDs turning back on:
        O O O X X O O X
        • EDIT: Now that it is showing a different message on boot, the card must have done something, as the lights are now:
          O O O O O O O X
      • I have seen posts online that say you do not need to “flash” the HBA, and others on the forum stating that you do.
        • I have tried to find the application to allow me to flash the HBA card, I think I can get it from here, but unsure what to do next?
          • If this is the correct software, how do I go about using / doing this?
          • Can I complete this step in UnRaid, or do I need to take the HBA out and put it into a Linux or Windows OS machine to do this step?

If anyone has any steps / information on how to get this card up and running would be greatly appreciated. Any additional information / questions, please let me know. Thanks!
