Someone is offering me a Supermicro 4U 36 Bay Storage Server Xeon 20 Core 3Ghz 256GB X540 10GBaseT. It has 2 xeon 10 core cpus, 256gb of dd3 and space for 36 drives. They want $500. Do you think its worth it? I use mostly Plex and *arrs that go with it. Sometimes 1 or 2 vms.
Welcome to Server Builds!
I use mostly Plex and *arrs that go with it. Sometimes 1 or 2 vms.
Given that use case I would say a definitive No it will not be worth it.
It will draw a ton of power, have low single threaded performance, and nothing you mentioned would come remotely close to using the capacity of a server like that.
4 - 6 cores 16GB - 32GB RAM and 1Gpbs - 2.5Gpbs network will likely be more than enough for your home media server.
Check out the NK 6.0 Guide for something that will better suit your use case.
agree with Ian on power draw and the use for mostly Plex and for 2-3 VM’s, the NK 6.0 Guide link he provided will work for what you need with some overhead.
Thank you guys for the feedback. I am going to build the NK 6.0.
