I should be able to throw in a spare HDD for boot and then use the 4 SATA hot swap bays for ZFS storage under Ubuntu, right? I’m thinking just a simple setup of samba shares and docker stack.
Total package is cheaper than buying the parts separately and it should just work. Happy days.
You will be able to, but have you considered Unraid?
I’ve looked at Unraid and other solutions. I’d like to play around and see what works. I might end up with Proxmox or esxi. Free is my favorite price.
When I run out of disk space I plan on adding a DAS based on guides here.

Unraid does cost money, but ultimately it will save you even more. You can use differently sized drives in the array, and add drives one at a time. Not many other storage solutions let you do that, certainly not Proxmox.
Mine just arrived.
