Unraid NAS Build

I just purchased a dedicated Plex HW box (HP S01) and looking to build a Unraid box to be my Plex NAS, Sonar/Radarr, Home Assistant, and potentially some storage for interior cameras.

I was originally going to use an old Dell T7500 (2x Xeon 5650s, 48GB RAM), but that motherboard doesn’t support SATA III. I’m considering just building a new system based on a i5/i7 CPU.

Another option is to use a AMD 5600X CPU that I have sitting around and build a system around that, but it seems like Intel is the preferred CPU when it comes to Unraid…and I would have to get a GPU for that system.

Thoughts?

I think I’ve got my build picked out… thoughts?

  • Supermicro X9SRI-F LGA 2011 Rev 1.2
  • Xeon E5-2620 w/stock cooler (also looking at the E5-2697 v2)
  • 16GB RAM
  • LSI SAS 9207 w/Mini SAS to 4x SATA SFF cables
  • 500W PSU
  • Silverstone CS380B Case
  • 2x 8TB / 2x 6TB HDD / 200GB SSD Cache

That proc seems a little bit nuts eh

I think it is, but there’s a local shop selling one $85. I think the 2620 would probably be enough for what I’m planning on doing…lol
