Sata to USB issues when viewing on Windows & Linux

I recently upgraded my NAS SATA drives and now want to repurpose the old drives. Prior to removing the drives from my Ubuntu RAID setup the drives had a secure erase preformed on them.

Now when I connect the drives to my USI-2535 adapter my Windows 10 system gives me a initialize disk error saying “incorrect function”. Thinking that maybe my adapter was bad I ordered a Aoko AE10GR adapter but it gives me the same error message.

Now for a interesting part, if I connect the drive directly to my motherboard I can see the full 4TB drive without any issues. Next, I proceeded to connect the drive through the different USB adapters to my Linux box and it sees the drive but as if it has 2 partitions each being 2TB in size. Again these drives came out of this Linux box in a RAID setup and it was seeing the full 4TB drive without issue. Also, at one point I was able to get the Windows box to see the drive through the adapter but it thought that the drive was only 2TB even though I had it plugged into a USB3.0 port.

Any help in figuring out what is going on is greatly appreciated.

the second one looks like it only does 2.5" drives, it doesn’t provide additional power needed by a 3.5" drive. I can’t link to the first one but maybe same boat?

you need an adapter that also takes a DC power connection to drive a 3.5" drive. they are usually a little more expensive.
