This is my first time doing any networking more than plugging ethernet cables into my Netgear R6400 so I’m excited. I’ve already transferred about a TB of media to it, and I’ll be getting a media server docker set up soon. Currently leaning towards jellyfin, but haven’t decided yet. Also looking into setting up either a reverse proxy or a VPN server to access it off my local network.
I got incredibly lucky, and one of my shelves next to my desk is about the same width as a rack. Once I get the media server up I’ll see how loud it gets, but so far it’s been silent.
This is the ‘server’ that’s getting replaced. Old HP Ultrabook (i5 3317U, 8GB RAM) with a 4TB external drive running Windows 8.
Things I plan to do in the future in no particular order:
- way more HDDs
- SSDs for cache
- graphics card for Rocket League
- more dockers, possibly a dropbox equivalent, pi-hole, the usual
Thank you to all the people who answered my questions on discord, it’s incredible how willing to help out you all are.
