ML350P Gen8 vs HP Z820 / Z840

Hello all. First time post.

I am considering the purchase of a second hand server. I was looking at either the ML350P Gen8 or the Z820 / Z840 series ( I realize that this is considered to be a desktop workstation). Either unit would assist me in consolidating 6 other smaller PC’s that serve as hosts for a myriad of apps. (Nextcloud, TrueNAS, HestiaCP, Plex Media Server, Prestashop, etc.) I have a few questions if I may.

Can the ML350P Gen8 be configured with 256GB of Ram

Is the ML350P Gen8 extremely noisy

Does the ML350P Gen8 consume a great deal of energy.

Pros / Cons.

Your input will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It looks like these workstations are E5-2600 V2 Xeons.

I don’t have personal experience with these workstations but in general the V2 E5 Xeon platform:

  1. Can be configured with 256GB or even 512GB of RAM
  2. Will consume a great deal of energy by modern standards
  3. Hard to say without having heard one, but I would assume since they are workstations that they will have reasonably good airflow in the case and will have reasonably quite fans. If not you could probably swap out the fans for quieter ones assuming the motherboard has standard fan connectors or adapters are redily avilible.

Pros: High Core Count CPUs, Large amounts of Low Cost ECC DDR3 RAM, and Plenty of PCIe lanes.

Cons: High power draw, Low single thread performance, Slow DDR3 RAM.
