Mixing regular SATA & SAS disks

Greetings o/

I have an HPE ML350 GEN9 server which has a single SFF cage which takes only 2.5" drives. The server came to me with several SAS drives which I replaced with regular consumer-market 2.5" SATA SSDs.

I know that the SSDs I have entered are not hot-swappable, but the SAS drives are. Here’s the question - while running my SATA SSDs, can I insert a SAS drive? The reason I want to do that is there is bootable OS installed on a few of them which I want to wipe, so I can sell them on the market.

This server is running my pfsense VM which acts as my router and FW and pulling everything out and inserting the old SAS drives will be kind of struggle for me.

I know that when SATA drives are used on SAS ports, the SAS is running on a particular protocol in order to work with such drives, but I have no idea what follows if you start to mix them, and if that’s safe.

Thanks!
