Hello there!
I want to show my current (the first!) project:
A simple but still cool SFF DIY home NAS for my personal projects & my family.
Prerequisite:
The goal of the project is simple:
- This NAS should be used for data storage, entertainement (video/music player, photo album sharing)
- The price of this NAS should be cheaper than a NAS that can be found in the general public like Synology or Qnap
- This NAS must be more powerful at equivalent price
- This NAS will be used as a PLEX server, it must be able to transcode at least 1080p
Its capacity will be able to transcode at least 3 sources simultaneously - This NAS will be able to virtualize
- This NAS can be used from the internet to save documents, files, photos from a laptop or smartphone
Ecological and economic aspect:
- The parts used must be second-hand or reconditioned or possibly refurbished
- In order to limit the carbon footprint, the parts must come from as small a range as possible, as far as possible.
Preferably with a hand delivery. A real challenge! - The total cost should not exceed 400 € for the complete setup without disks.
- This NAS should not consume more than 300W in maximum power.
Technical requirements:
- This NAS should be as quiet and discreet/compact as possible
- This NAS will be used with my audiovisual equipment (TV, home cinema) in HDMI
- This NAS will be connected to my network using two gigabit ports (BONUS : WiFi + Bluetooth)
- This NAS must have at least a 4-core CPU and 8GB of RAM, it will be able to host some virtual machines
After this “short” introduction, let me show you the configuration that I selected after a lot of research:
