[Guide] NAS Killer 4.1 supplemental + deals

You might want to look at the Arctic Freezer 12 instead of the i2, it’ll be much quieter. The i2 was $9 when it was recommended, seems like the price has roughly doubled making it not as good of a deal.

Unraid is an entire NAS OS, not just a RAID level. In fact, it’s not RAID at all. It’s parity protected JBOD.
Your disks don’t have to all be the same size, you can add disks 1 by one, and there’s a ton of cool features for homelab use. It’s extremely flexible and easy to use, and there’s a lot of options for power users as well. Some people are put off by the cost, but most people find that it pays for itself very quickly.

Thanks JDM. I have ordered the Arctic Freezer 12 from the link (affiliate link?) on this forum and look forward to a quieter experience. The old Thermaltake - will try to return this but may prove difficult.

I will do a comparison between RAID 6 and UNRAID and keep reading the stickied posts on this forum

If you have any questions about Unraid, feel free to ask!

I see the PLUS (12 drives) is $89, which is reasonable if the OS is feature-rich and protects against data loss (about as well as RAID 6 does). Also I like that the drives don’t need to be the same size and suffer from loss of storage if I add a few 12TB down the line.

edit: after reading more on UNRAID with parity, I’m sold!

Is it possible to do a NAS / DAS hybrid? I know they are different but I’m assuming DAS are not necessarily attached to network but are typically offline and in certain cases could be added to a NAS ?

Is it possible to have a NAS and also have it direct attached?

NAS = network attached storage
DAS = direct attached storage (typically to a NAS or other host)

I’m not sure what you mean by hybrid…

DAS is nothing more than an expansion of an existing setup, generally because there is no more room to add disks internally, so you put them in a second enclosure and attach it to the first one: AKA DAS.

Thanks, it is much more clear to me now. I swapped to the Cooler Master 350 case recommended in the NK4.0 guide and this build will start as a NAS running UNRAID. I doubt I’ll be needing a DAS but came across it while reading other posts.

Thanks! Really helps me understand better

It’s good to be aware that it’s an option, so when it comes time to upgrade… you can add more later!

Since this CPU Xeon 1230V2 doesn’t come with an integrated GPU, do I need to purchase a cheap one off eBay?

Depends on the motherboard you pick. For example, the supermicro ones have an onboard VGA adapter.

You don’t need a GPU for the S5512.

I just wanted to say thanks for posting these deals. I was able to grab the E3-1230v2 32GB combo. They actually shipped it with the E3-1270v2 instead, woot! This replaced my older core2 duo (not sure which one exactly) w/ 8GB ram. Not only is it a nice upgrade, but it uses less power and I can actually fit all of my drives in this case. With unraid I literally had to just move the drives over and plug in the USB drive. Everything just worked.

Now I’m just waiting for a good 12+ drive case at a reasonable price. Boy am I mad at myself for not grabbing one of those rosewill L4500’s this past black friday.

I just found this forum today and also mad I can’t find the Rosewill L4500 anywhere, went with the SilverStone Technology SST-CS380B which gives you 8 hotswappable HDD bays

I also got a 1270v2. Cheers!

I just started up my machine and it makes a really loud BEEP. Nothing posts to my display. Not sure what I should do. I believe the motherboard Is trying to warn me I have missed an important detail with either power or a connector.

I have the Tyan S5512 from eBay. I downloaded the full manual and quick reference from the official documentation page. (8 SAS + 6 SATA)

Powered off my machine until I figure out what went wrong. I have 4 EasyStore HDD shucked and connected to the SAS ports with the cables that came with the server instead of SATA ports. I also am not sure if I connected the PSU—> CPU properly. Also, it is possible my power supply is bad but I tested it with a PSU tester from Seasonic (basically connects the two ports to start up the motherboard cable).

Any advice from a helpful stranger?

After days of searching for the rosewill rsv-l4500 and failing to find any available for sale on eBay, Amazon, etc… I think I found a good contender that I would love to get feedback on.

Has anyone tried the IPC-3U16 from Plink? Are they good? Worth the $355 price tag?

Looking forward to hearing from anyone

I would start by disconnecting all of the drives and all but 1 stick of ram. You should just have the cpu, psu, and 1 stick of ram in there. See if you get anything there.

Thanks. Just found this:

Chapter 4: Diagnostics

If you experience problems with setting up your system, always check the following things in the following order:

By checking these items, you will most likely find out what the problem might have been when setting up your system. For more information on troubleshooting, check the TYAN

4.1 - Beep Codes

Fatal errors, which halt the boot process, are communicated through two kinds of audible beeps.

 A single long beep followed by two short beeps: It indicates that a Video error has occurred.

 A single long beep repeatedly: It indicates that a DRAM error has occurred. The most common type of error is a memory error.

Before contacting your vendor or TYAN, note as much as you can about the beep code length and order that you experience. Also, be ready with information regarding add-in cards, drives and O/S to speed the support process and come to a quicker solution.

———

EDIT: it is just one REALLY long BEEP (30+ seconds). I think I have faulty DRAM, according to the manual.

Not PSU-> I swapped with two other PSU and the same beep occurred with all 3 PSU.

The beep length is really long. Going to contact the eBay seller.

Edit 2: according to this post by JDM, https://www.reddit.com/r/JDM_WAAAT/comments/geyzkh/continuous_alarm_tone_on_tyan_s5512_mobo/

It looks like I have additional issues. I am using a VGA->HDMI plug :electric_plug: so I cannot see my BIOS. Additionally, it could be a fan setting in the BIOS and not the RAM. I have the Cooler Master Elite 350 case and tried the included PSU and a Corsair 750W PSU. It appears that it is also not a RAM issue.

I now believe it is a fan setting issue in BIOS (causing the 30+ second nonstop long beep) and is compounded by the fact that I cannot see anything since I am using the VGA—> HDMI converter. Did not expect to encounter so many issues
