Not directly, no. You could use a PCI-E to m.2 slot adapter to attach a drive, but you won’t be able to boot from NVMe.

i see, so using it as a cache drive will work fine as long as the machine is boot off of a sata drive right?

Yeah, that would work just fine.

I had the same problem, this HP part, 654540-001, will enable a 2.5 SAS drive to be connected to the existing cables in the system, and be mounted in the server like any 3.5 drive.

I just got done with my build on the chenbro motherboard and I am having this beeping sound which wouldn’t stop on boot. I was wondering if anyone has had such an experience and what they did to resolve it? Thank you

Does anyone know how to use the management port on the back? Is it similar to HP ILO or is it a serial port or what?

Awesome guide. Figured I would share my experience so far. The Chenbro was out of stock at the moment so I pieced together everything myself. Went with a 500w inexpensive power supply as well as a 4 core (8 thread) Xeon.

Was greeted with a steady “beep-beep-beep” when first tried to power on but the system would not POST. Ended up going to Goodwill and getting a VGA monitor for $6 and a VGA cable for $6. Still no dice. Tried the VGA to HDMI and didn’t have any luck - got an “out of range” error on my HDMI portable monitor.

Realized I bought the wrong kind of RAM…I got ECC RDIMM when I really needed ECC UDIMM. Once the new RAM came in, I powered it on and still no good.

Ended up taking off the cooler, removing the CPU and reseating it. This did the trick and the system came to life. Was some beeping but was able to use the BIOS to disable the warnings for the fan. The BIOS is a later version around 2018 I believe.

Booted into DOS using a FreeDOS USB and flashed the LSI HBA controller into IT mode. Wasn’t that difficult, just needed to erase the IR version that was on there first. Great guides on this site for that. It is a LSI 2008 controller.

Booted up into Ubuntu 20.04 server to test the HBA controller and everything worked just fine. SATA drives are recognized on both the SATA and HBA ports. This is going to be great. Installed all the extras into the case.

Now am in the process of migrating a bunch of JBODs into the system. Deciding if I just want to keep it plain Ubuntu Server or go for something like OMV etc. This box will host just JBODs for the time being.

I was wondering if anyone had a link to a later BIOS upgrade and BMC upgrade? Most interested in the IPMI that may not use Java (as obviously Java is defunct at this time). What are you using for the IPMI? Thanks in advance!

You could always give TrueNAS a try. That is what I have been running.

Also think Open-E DSS would work on that.Not on HCL, but just a customized Linux

Good to know that PL316E/8G works with that motherboard, the only part numbers that I knew were BG8G1333MTE22, BD8GX21333MTE22

So I bit the bullet and picked up one of the Chenbro NR12000 1U SERVER with a TYAN S5512 motherboard. Many here have suggested pulling out all of the “goodies” and moving to a different case to cut down on the “jet engine” decibel fan sound. I had a specific space where I wanted to use the 1U case that came with the unit so I came up with a case modification using a NH-L9i low-profile cooler.

  1. The NH-L9i cooler is typically mounted to a motherboard by removing the backplate from the motherboard and threading thumbscrews from the back of the motherboard into the mounting brackets for the cooler. As stated in this forum, removing the bracket from the TYAN S5512 motherboard will ruin it. I removed the cooler’s brackets, drilled out the threads on the ends of cooler brackets and dropped screws down from the top of the cooler bracket. (These were some odd screws from my random screw jar. The screws do not need a non-threaded post in their design. I just needed hex-head screws that were the proper thread for the TYAN S5512 motherboard’s bracket.)

  2. I then bent a cheap open-ended 15/64 wrench to make the tool I needed to tighten the screws.

  3. After applying paste to the processor, I pressed the center of the heatsink flat to the processor and tightened the mounting screws in an “X” formation to ensure that the cooler remained level. (It was tedious but it worked.) BE CARFUL not to bend or damage motherboard components with the wrench while tightening the cooler screws.

  4. I carefully measured the case lid and cut a rectangle hole for the Nactua fan to stick out of the top of the case. (Thanks to my friends who have a machine shop. They made this part easy.)
    Be sure to add a 1/4 inch gap to the end of the rectangle hole toward the back of the server so that the case lid can slide for installing and removing the case lid.

  5. With a little 3D printing magic, my son made a little frame that goes around the fan and covers the gap. I hope this cuts down dust in the server and makes the modification look nice.

At this point, I have noticed that the original fans in the 1U case are “jet-engine” loud for a few seconds on boot [probably testing on boot] but not loud when I stream video. The Nactua fan on the cooler is connected specifically to the CPU fan header. I have looked carefully through the BIOS (Version V8.B14) but do not see any settings for adjusting the fan curves manually or passing the controllers through to Unraid. Am I missing something?

I would definitely flip that fan around as an intake, not an exhaust.

Fan control settings might be in the IPMI if the board has it.

Why do you think that intake would be better?

Just a heads up for those looking for international shipping. The costs are… extreme.
