I am planning to upgrade my 2015 Synology NAS to a rackmounted NAS but I don’t know which hardware to get. I’m open to using used Supermicro chassis but which one should I get from eBay and what other components should I get?
Right now, I have a total of 14 SATA drives in my Synology setup and I want to be able to use those in the new environment.
Thoughts?

For a custom NAS build, I’d focus on low power consumption, enough SATA ports for future expansion, and good airflow rather than spending too much on raw performance. Also, make sure you have a reliable backup plan, since RAID alone isn’t a backup. What kind of storage capacity and workload are you planning for?
