Another first NAS build

I’ve been running PMS for several years on an old desktop that recently crapped out on me using external HDs for storage. I’ve been lurking here a long time thinking that one day I would build my own server/NAS. Well, the time has finally come. After reading alot, I’ve decided that I want to build 2 separate boxes. 1) a rack mounted Unraid NAS with plenty of room to upgrade/expand in the future and 2) a HP S01 transcoding box.

I will probably play around with some other VMs, Dockers, jails what-have-you, but the main purpose for these boxes is to store and serve my media as it expands and act as a personal cloud (probably using something like Nextcloud).

So, here’s my first draft build. I’ve never built my own computer or anything so I could really use your assistance and advice on this. I’m looking for the best bang for my buck, but also have a little room to expand as I go. Let me know if you see anything that doesn’t look right or if you have a better deal I could go with.

Thanks!

For the S01

Hopefully, this all makes sense. I am also in the market for a decent rack if anyone knows of any good deals.

Looks good to me. 4X8GB DDR3 ECC UDIMM should be closer to $80, but ymmv. Case should also be cheaper if you can wait. You don’t need front fans. QSV box can make do with 8GB if you’re not transcoding to ramdisk.

Thanks for taking a look. Do you have thoughts on where to look for cheaper RAM? I’ve checked ebay for 4x 8gb ecc ram and find see anything even close to $80.

Also just realized my HBA is the wrong one for the HDDs I’m using. I need to get a 9207-8i since the drives are 4kn.

What controller do you have currently? Most SAS 2 controllers, including the 9201/9210/9211 work just fine with 4Kn drives as data drives. The limitation is that you can’t boot to an OS installed on a 4Kn drive on a 9201/9210/9211.

I see! That makes sense. I was going to get the LSI card mentioned above. But then I was reading it didn’t support 4kn drives. As long as it will work fine with 4kn drives as data drives, I think I’ll be ok.

you might tune an ebay search how you like it, then drop the price threshold and save the search with email alerts.
