AMD Opteron vs Intel Xeon

I’ve seen a few boxes popping up in eBay with AMD Opteron CPUs, are these any good for running a few VMs? What’s the advantage/disadvantage over a Xeon CPU?
For example:

Very high power consumption, much lower performance, and almost zero upgrade path.

We avoid them for these and many other reasons.

I had to talk myself off the ledge a week or so ago. I thought…I’ve never build a Opteron system before. Then the further I thought about it…I realized it’s just not a good platform. That’s why nobody builds with them.
