Hello guys, just a little bit of background.
I’m from Europe, specifically from Romania, this means the ebay prices listed here don’t actually quite match the second hand Market here.
I want to build myself a headless server to serve as a
NAS – for family photos storage and media for plex
Plex Server - for max 3 transcoded streams maybe. This will be installed under Docker.
Nextcloud - for my wife school documents( she is a teacher) and our pictures
The OS would either be
OMV 5 - I don’t see a lot of people recommend this here, why ?
Ubuntu server
Unraid
My experience with linux is very limited but I can follow tutorials
Ok, going to Hardware now.
I see here the biggest recommendations are the Intel Xeons, which strangely have big prices on the local ebay market here, so I had to improvise
Looking for good deals on the local ebay, I have a few things to run with you. Intel processors hold their price here so ryzen would be a cheaper way to go.
AM4 mATX B450 Motherboard – 58 USD
16GB DDR4 – 70 USD
500W Bronze modular PSU – 35 USD
MiniTower or CubeTower Case with 4 to 6 3.5inch bays – 47 USD
256GB SATA III SSD – 35 USD
TOTAL: 245 USD
Model | Passmark | USD |
---|---|---|
Ryzen 5 1400 | 8360 | 58.1 |
Ryzen 5 1600 | 12283 | 69.8 |
Ryzen 5 1500x | 10110 | 69.8 |
Ryzen 5 2400G | 9321 | 81.4 |
Ryzen 5 2600 | 13513 | 93.0 |
I5-8500 | 11800 | |
I7-8700 | 15141 |
Model | USD |
---|---|
GT 710 | 23.3 |
GTX 1050TI 4GB | 81.4 |
GTX 1060 3GB | 93.0 |
GTX 1060 6gb | 104.7 |
RX 550 4gb | 34.9 |
RX 560 4GB | 46.5 |
RX 570 4GB | 58.1 |
RX 470 8GB | 69.8 |
This means a system with
Option 1: Ryzen 5 2600 and GT 710 – 362 USD
Option 2: Ryzen 5 2600 and GTX 1060 - 431 USD
For intel I found some prebuild solutions with good prices.
Option 3: Dell Optiplex 3060 or HP Prodesk 400 G5 MT – 390 USD
I5-8500, 16GB DDR4, 250 GB SSD
Option 4: Prebuild gaming Rig – 520 USD
I7-8700, 16GB DDR4, 250 GB SSD
If I go intel, I get quicksynch, but I have to live with a Prodesk 400 G5 MT case – only 3 x 3.5 internal bays
Option 4 sounds ok, but I would have to change the case(fulltower) and the cheap Chinese PSU
What do you guys think, which is the best bang for the buck? I dont know for how long im gonna find option 4 though, it might be sold soon.
