To keep it short and sweet, I am looking to build a NAS/web server/VM host with a low power consumption to keep costs of operation low. This is my first server build so I’m not sure if I am on the right track. Have done a lot of reading/research but would like a second opinion from those more experienced.
MISSION:
NAS:
Want to have deep media storage (photos, videos, movies) and run a plex server
Web server:
Have a website I’d like to host locally and use my current web host as a failover if my home server goes down for some reason. Also would like to use the server to run a few different scripts. Mostly data analytics/scraping
VMs:
Would like to keep things (plex, web server, anything else) separate through the use of multiple VMs.
SPECS:
Motherboard:
ASROCK B85 PRO4 or Supermicro X10SLM±F
CPU:
|i5-4670|SR14A|4C/4T|3.8GHz| or |i7-5775C|SR2AG|4C/8T|3.7GHz|65|10837|
RAM:
best bang for buck 32gb NON-ECC or ECC depending on motherboard
STORAGE:
Have some SSDs lying around to use for a boot drive for VMs
WD red for plex/deep storage
POWER SUPPLY:
EVGA 500W or 750W. Leaning towards 500W just for the sake of consuming less power but not sure
Does anyone have any suggestions for better performance? Is there anything I am missing or could be added to improve the build? Open to any suggestions/critique. Thank you in advanced!
