[Guide] NAS Killer 4.1 supplemental + deals

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction, this is my first experience with enterprise grade hardware.

My goal is to install Unraid and mainly use the machine for PLEX, would I benefit from installing a GPU? Maybe when I start messing around with VMs down the road?

Impatiently waiting for my combo to arrive, meanwhile looking at CPU fan and other options. Any thoughts on a good fan? I know there are couple of options up there but my main concern is the noise. I have the Thermaltake Gravity i2 on order but not sure if its better to get an Arctic one or look for something else?

The Arctic Alpine 12 will definitely be quieter.

So, stated before I bought combo 4, it arrived today and everything is in working order with one exception… The TYAN board came with a backplate for the stock passive cooler. I have a huge old noctua cooler I planned on using, which has it’s own back plate. But there’s a back plate already on the board that I can’t seem to remove. They are incompatible with each other, any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Oh and with the stock heatsink just sitting in bios the cpu is reading 55C. Probably going to get much hotter under load.

Do not attempt to remove the Xeon backplate.

You can use this list to choose an appropriate cooler.

Yeah, once I realized it was fixed I didn’t touch it, sighed, reinstalled the stock heatsink and pressed on. Thanks a ton man. So current values are:
CPU DTS: 55 C
CPU below Tmax: 49 C

Would I be alright to press on with setting up unraid, or should I just wait for a new heatsink?

Those temps are OK for basic setup and whatnot, you can lay it flat and just put a fan on it for now. It’ll drop the temps quite a bit.

Bet, any specific cost/performance recommendations for coolers?

What chassis will you end up using?

went with the fractal R5, most bang for the buck, least for me. Almost bought the R6 but preferred more HD mounts stock.

I think the Arctic Freezer 12 or 34 would be best!

Awesome, thanks a ton man. Really appreciate the assist, and no messing with that damn backplate. ha.

Looks like on amazon the 12 CO version is cheaper. I know they brand it as “continuous operation” found any other difference? Still worth?

The adapters you linked seem to be shipping late, is there a better option you are aware of?

These perhaps? Selection isn’t great on Amazon.

Thank you! any thought on how to get the backplate off to install the Alpine 12? It seems like a lot of work and pain to take that off but I would really like to have a PWN fan on this system rather than the Gravity i2

You cannot remove the backplate without damaging the motherboard.
The Arctic Freezer 12 is natively compatible, however.
