[Guide] Building a NAS for ZeosPantera remotely - Emergency Quarantine NAS

0. Overview

1. Zeos’ Info

Zeos runs Z Reviews, a largely audio focused review channel.

2. Current Setup

3. Problem

Reallocated sectors on multiple Seagate IronWolf 10TB drives.

4. Proposed Solution

Replace Synology NAS with an Unraid NAS, with new shucked 14TB drives.
Migrate the data from the old NAS to the new one.
Use the working 5 x HGST drives as an offsite backup.

Due to the limitations of Amazon prime shipping (and other services) we did the best we could with what was available.

3. Build in Progress

Z sent me a few pics from the build.

Crybaby Craig’s hot sauce, btw.

Unfortunately, I forgot that the 12TB and 14TB don’t have the middle screw hole.
Looks like we’ll just be using the top one.

Pre-wired some sata cables.

Splicing some wires to shorten up the SATA connections.

Up and running

4. Twitch Streams/Videos

Initial NAS build (timestamp = 3h 6m 32s)

Me hopping on voice to assist (timestamp = 4h 14m 40s)

I streamed BIOS and initial unraid setup with Z for many hours (timestamp = 2h 11m 46s)

5. Other stuff

He’s already changed the banner…

6. Component Unboxings

Sweet build! Very reasonably priced build. Love that Node 804. A lot packed into a small footprint. And cooling is amazing.

I’m going to build this but I was curious why you chose the Marvell SATA card over a SAS HBA like a Dell H200 for similar price.

Love the site and this build. Any chance these twitch vods are still up somewhere?

This is on sale at the moment: $90 USD from $140

I didn’t manage to save them :frowning:

Not much interesting happened to be honest.

Hello, nice build : I’m running a similar one, searched for cheap parts during months and it was the cheapest I could come up with ! Same case and motherboard, at least (RAM is similar, but 16GB).
However, I encounter random kernel panics, it can’t run longer than half a day (hard reboot needed).
Maybe there’s something I missed during bios setup, can you post the changes you made here ?
I’m investigating for weeks now, the hardware seems fine…

I’d suggest making a thread over in #technology:tech-support

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll definitely do this with complete diagnosis data soon.
There’s already too much “kernel panic help me plz” on internet but I don’t want to add one for something that could be trivial (as I’m new to Unraid & NAS building). I’m still investigating for now.
